Visit

The Bourbaki Panorama, a European cultural monument, portrays the internment of 87’000 French soldiers who fled to Switzerland during to winter of 1871. Visiting the Bourbaki Panorama is like immersing into the Val-de-Travers valley at the end of the 19th century, when Switzerland laid the foundations of the humanitarian and neutral tradition. This inspiring story was depicted on the 10 x 112 m (originally 14 x 112 m) circular painting by the painter Edouard Castres in 1881. Circular paintings as a form of mass media are not only considered as the precursor of the cinema, they are also a source of inspiration for contemporary medial trends and types of digital narratives. The classified building houses a multicultural and multimedial offer under one roof.

Accessibility for people with walking difficulties

The Bourbaki Panorama is accessible for people with disabilities. However, due to the historical structure of the building, there is no passenger lift to the circular painting. A stair lift is available for guests with walking difficulties, which is operated and accompanied by museum staff. The transport takes place over two floors. We recommend that you allow sufficient time for this.

For detailed information, see the Ginto app OK:GO.

Many thanks!

The two stairlifts were modernized in spring 2023 thanks to the generous financial support of the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation and the Denk an mich Foundation.
