Association

The Association Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne was founded in 1979 with the stated aim of saving the unique circular painting from decay, financing the restoration work, and ensuring that the painting continues to receive the proper specialist care in the future, too. The Association is a partner of the Foundation Bourbaki Panorama and supports it in preserving the circular painting and running the Museum. Most of the financing is through contributions and donations.

RENOVATION OF THE OPTICAL APPARATUS

The panorama is characterised by its sophisticated architecture: it owes its three-dimensional overall effect to a special textile construction, namely the "optical apparatus". Consisting of a baldachin, velum and solar sails, this illuminates the picturesque circular painting in the best light, making it appear infinitely large and real. The most extensive part of the current restoration project is the replacement of the baldachin, which rises skywards above the viewing platform. With the restoration, the foundation is responding to visible signs of wear and age on individual components of the overall work of art, which contrast with the high painterly quality of the circular painting.

Due to the specific construction and the customised design, the replacement of the optical apparatus is unique and cost-intensive - the investment amounts to over 800,000 Swiss francs (of which around 470,000 for the "optical apparatus"). The Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne Association is supporting the Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne Foundation as the client in securing the funding for this huge project. Based on the law on the protection of cultural monuments, the canton of Lucerne (cantonal monument preservation) and the federal government (Federal Office of Culture) are making financial contributions to the project.

Thank you for every contribution you make to maintain the Bourbaki Panorama viewing experience!
